Al Borde (2007), estudio de arquitectura con base en Quito, Ecuador. Conformado por David Barragán, Pascual Gangotena, Maríaluisa Borja y Esteban Benavides. Habita el territorio del cuestionamiento, donde las certezas sobre lo que debe o no debe ser la arquitectura están en constante construcción. Sus ideas se desarrollan en el hacer, y con mayor precisión y detalle en sitio.

Al Borde persigue una arquitectura cuya estética es consciente de la energía gastada en la construcción, aparentemente sin esfuerzo, donde la forma de unir los materiales es clara y lógica. Una arquitectura abierta a la participación activa de los usuarios en el proceso de diseño y construcción, donde todos puedan ver resuelto el problema, sin más pretensiones que atender las demandas del proyecto. El diseño afronta la sostenibilidad de la vida como centro de la discusión (recursos, consumo, género corresponsabilidad, y desigualdad social).

Construye con los recursos y técnicas del lugar, donde el territorio es siempre una variable particular y única, los proyectos se convierten en una radiografía del sitio, que hablan de las costumbres de la gente, su historia, sus problemas y necesidades. La diversidad de los proyectos representa la voluntad de la gente de comprometerse con las ideas, asumiendo riesgos y participando en la toma de decisiones.

Al Borde (2007), architecture firm based in Quito, Ecuador. Formed by David Barragán, Pascual Gangotena, Maríaluisa Borja and Esteban Benavides. It inhabits the territory of questioning, where certainties about what architecture should or should not be are under constant construction. Its ideas are developed in the making, and with greater precision and detail on site.

It pursues an architecture whose aesthetics are conscious of the energy expended in its construction. It is seemingly effortless, where the way materials are joined together is clear and logical. An architecture that is open to the active participation of the users in the design and construction process. Where everyone can see the problem solved, without the pretense of meeting the project's requirements. The design centers the discussion on the sustainability of life (resources, co-responsibility, consumption, gender, and social inequality).

It builds with the resources and techniques of the place, where the territory is always a particular and unique variable. The projects become an x-ray of the place, which speaks of the customs of the people, their history, their problems, and their needs. The willingness of the people to engage with ideas, to take risks, and to participate in decision-making is reflected in the diversity of the projects.

"Al borde is a project led by four architects. They try to be consistent in approaching architecture in the most human way possible with minimal resources, not as an excuse for their scarcity, but as an aesthetic and political resource in itself, placed on the border between art and architecture. They develop a kind of “intimate discussion of place” and as a work ethics, propose a design that originates from the “common intelligence”. Through various projects they generate dynamics of social interchange where people design from their own collective consciousness. Al Borde is a forceful project that continuously questions the idea of an architecture ruled by discipline and driven by capital."
